In a dramatic ending, the Philadelphia Phillies staged a comeback win over the
Cincinnati Redlegs by the count of 3 to 2.
Philadelphia had the winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs using 2 hits.
Jim Greengrass was the sparkplug when he cracked a solo homerun (his 3rd of
the season). After an out was recorded, Willie Jones came up and he ripped a
solo home run (his 15th of the season) giving Philadelphia the victory as
8,753 happy fans celebrated wildly. Philadelphia totaled 7 on the night.
Jack Meyer(8-8) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. In his Major League
debut Don Gross(0-1)was tagged with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 1 walk in
8 and 1/3 innings.
Mayo Smith was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought game
like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see the
fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win tonight!'
