Left fielder Frank Thomas blasted a grand slam and Vern Law completed the game

without help from the bullpen as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago

Cubs by the score of 11 to 3 at Forbes Field.



Thomas had a big day at the plate. He stroked a one-base hit which plated a

run in the 5th inning and launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 22nd of the

season) in the 6th inning. Pittsburgh rapped out 14 hits for the afternoon.



The victory went to Law(7-10) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Sam

Jones(9-9) ended up with the loss. His ERA increased from 3.09 to 3.44 as he

allowed 8 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.
