Andy Carey, with his 3rd hit, singled in the winning run in the 14th giving the Yankees a 5-4 win against the White Sox and a share of 1st place.

Andy Carey had 3 base hits and Ed Lopat had a strong outing at Yankee Stadium

as the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox in 14 innings 5 to 4.



The game was deadlocked at 3 after nine full innings. New York came out the

victor in the 14th inning. Yogi Berra reached on an error. Two outs later

Carey came up and he delivered a one-base hit making New York the victors to

the delight of the home town faithful. For the game New York out-hit Chicago

12 to 9.



The victory was credited to Bob Turley(12-5) who went 1 inning, allowing no

runs. Sandy Consuegra(6-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.



New York now has a record of 64-34. With the loss Chicago now has a record of

63-33.
