In a game for the baseball purist, Billy Pierce(11-4) and Bob
Porterfield(5-11) squared off in a tense pitching duel, spectacular Chicago
White Sox finally emerged victorious over Washington Nationals, 2 to
1.
Pierce contributed a very nicely pitched game. He surrendered only 4 hits and
2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. Washington threatened in the 9th but their
rally came up short.
Pierce got relief help from Dixie Howell who gained credit for his 6th save.
