Dean Stone hurled a 3 hitter and Carlos Paula had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the
Washington Nationals topped the woeful Kansas City Athletics by a score of 7
to 1 at Griffith Stadium.
Stone(10-6) looked very much in control throughout the day. He didn't give up
much, just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 4.18 to
3.95. Washington banged out 13 on the afternoon.
The loss was charged to Bobby Shantz(1-11). He allowed Washington 7 runs in 4
innings of work. 'When Stone is on like that it is a tough game to play, no
doubt about it,' Lou Boudreau said. 'He always pitches well against us.'
