Third baseman Eddie Yost connected with a 'big fly' and scored 3 times at

Griffith Stadium as the Washington Nationals beat the lifeless Kansas City

Athletics by the count of 9 to 7.

The game started off with Washington taking the lead in the first scoring one

runner utilizing 2 base hits. Yost laced a single. After an out was

recorded, Mickey Vernon came to the plate and lined a one-base hit. Clint

Courtney then hit a deep fly scoring the run. The Kansas City offense proved

no trouble in the 9th.

The win went to Johnny Schmitz(7-7) who allowed 5 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Chuck Stobbs recorded his 2nd save. Ray Herbert(2-8) was the loser. He

allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3

innings.
