Tom Poholsky completed the game without help from the bullpen and Nels
Burbrink collected 2 extra-base hits at Sportsmans Park as the St. Louis
Cardinals won a thriller over the Brooklyn Dodgers in, 2 to 1.
St. Louis scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Pete
Whisenant reached on an error. Joe Frazier came next and he delivered a
base-hit. Solly Hemus was the next batter, but he struck out. One out
later, Ken Boyer came to the plate and stroked a one-base hit giving St.
Louis the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. The game was a
scoreless duel until the 7th inning.
The win went to Poholsky(4-4) who allowed 1 run in the game. The losing
pitcher was Clem Labine(7-3) in relief. The St. Louis ballclub's record now
stands at 43-56. With the loss, the Brooklyn ballclub's record is 65-37.
