Richie Ashburn had 3 base hits and 2 RBI and Herm Wehmeier delivered 9 solid

innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs 9 to 1 at

Wrigley Field.



Philadelphia drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning

plating an isolated run on 3 hits. Philadelphia finished with 17 hits in the

victory.



The win went to Wehmeier(7-7) who allowed 1 run in the game. Dave Hillman(1-1)

took the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.



'Wehmeier gave us exactly what we needed tonight,' Mayo Smith said. 'When he

threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his

change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'
