Sam Jones racked up an impressive total of 10 strikeouts at Wrigley Field
where the Chicago Cubs beat the league door-mat Pittsburgh Pirates by the
score of 5 to 3.
Jones(11-9) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much,
just 6 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings. Chicago banged out 9 on the afternoon.
Ron Kline(4-13) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good,
giving up 5 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. Stan Hack was asked about the
performance of Jones, 'He had his good stuff out there this afternoon. The
fans really get into it when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that
seems to give him even more adrenalin.'
