Whitey Ford tossed a complete game at Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees
won a thriller over the Cleveland Indians in, 3 to 2.
The deciding run was scored by New York in the 9th. Andy Carey reached on an
error. Gil McDougald stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a
sacrifice bunt. Ford then would hit into a fielders choice resulting in an
exciting win for New York and a raucous post-game celebration by the home
town fans. New York and Cleveland each finished the afternoon with 4 hits.
Ford(13-5) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. The loss was charged
to Jose Santiago(0-1) in relief. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and
did not allow an earned run in the game.
'He had his 'A' game today,' Casey Stengel said of Ford. 'Very impressive
performance.'
