AL Transaction August 5th

The New York Yankees sent down shortstop Billy Hunter and called up Bobby Richardson. The 27 year old Hunter was aquired from Baltimore in the huge 16 player record breaking deal that took place last November. After hitting .225 with one homer and 30 RBI in 135 games last year, the slick fielding 3 year veteran won the SS job from Phil Rizzuto in the spring. He has now lost the job hitting .229 with one homer and 17 RBI. The main problem has been the increased errors and decrease in range from last year. Yankee skipper Casey Stengel said he will use a combo of Rizzuto, Jerry Coleman, and Richardson. Billy Martin should also be back soon from his tour of duty in Korea.

Richardson is a 19 year old rookie from Sumter, South Carolina who will be making his major league debut. He was signed as an ameuter free agent by the Yankees June 12, 1953.
