Willard Schmidt was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies
in 10 innings 4 to 3 at Sportsmans Park.
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. St. Louis was victorious in
the 10th inning. Wally Moon led off and started the attack as he drew a
walk. After an out was recorded, Bob Miller came up and he threw a pitch
that the catcher muffed. Bill Virdon then blasted a two-run home run (his
18th of the season) making St. Louis the victors to the delight of the home
town faithful. St. Louis finished with 10 hits in the victory.
The win was credited to Schmidt(3-1) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs.
Miller(4-3) was tagged with the loss in relief.
