Gil McDougald had 2 base hits as the New York Yankees won in dramatic fashion

over the Detroit Tigers by a score of 4 to 3 at Yankee Stadium.

New York scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning with 3

runs using 3 hits. Bobby Richardson started the inning off right when he hit

a single. Casey Stengel then called for a steal which was successful. Joe

Collins then would ground out scoring a run. Mickey Mantle came up and he

lashed a single. Yogi Berra stepped into the box and drew a walk. Joe

Coleman then unleashed a wild pitch. Eddie Robinson stepped up next and he

drew a walk to load the bases. McDougald then laced a single plating another

run. After an out was recorded, Bob Cerv came up and he drew a walk making

New York the winners and sending the 32,427 fans home happy. New York

finished with just 5 hits in the victory.

The victory was credited to Tom Sturdivant(4-2) who went 1 inning, allowing no

runs. The losing pitcher was Steve Gromek(6-9). He allowed just 4 runs and 4

hits in 8 and 1/3 innings.

'That was exciting!,' McDougald said. 'I would have paid money to watch this

one.'
