WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Ernie Banks robbed Pee Wee Reese of a base hit.
Ernie Banks hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI and Warren Hacker allowed just 3 hits
as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 3 to 1 at Wrigley
Field.
Chicago came up with 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Hacker got things going when
he slapped a one-base hit. Two outs later Jim King stepped in and he drew a
walk. Banks then doubled scoring two teammates. That early run support was
enough for Hacker(8-9) and Chicago. Brooklyn had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.
Johnny Podres(9-3) was hit with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 6
hits and 3 walks. 'Hacker was the man today,' Stan Hack said. 'He had just
about every pitch working.'
