First baseman Eddie Waitkus had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Robin Roberts completed
the game without help from the bullpen at Ebbets Field as the Philadelphia
Phillies beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 6 to 4.
Philadelphia came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 8th
inning scoring 3 runs using 3 hits. Willie Jones led off the inning for
Philadelphia when he reached on an error. Granny Hamner was the next batter,
but he struck out. Waitkus then delivered a one-base hit. One out later,
Del Ennis came to the plate and stroked a single resulting in a run. Ennis
took second on the throw. Roberts stepped into the box and lashed a base-hit
which was good for two more runs. Roberts took second on the throw.
Philadelphia finished with 12 hits in the victory.
The victory was credited to Roberts(12-14) who went the distance, allowing 4
runs. The loss was charged to Don Newcombe(11-9). Although losing the
contest, he whiffed 10 batters in 7 and 2/3 innings.
With this win, Philadelphia has a 51-67 record. They have been 5-5 lately.
With the loss, the Brooklyn ballclub's record is 69-44.
