Jerry Lynch hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the
Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 6 to 3 at Connie Mack Stadium.
Bob Friend(8-10) earned his pay with a solid performance for Pittsburgh. He
was reached for 11 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2
'round-trippers'. Philadelphia had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.
Friend got help from Ron Kline who was credited with his 1st save. Saul
Rogovin(0-5) was charged with the loss. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said
Mayo Smith 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'
