Bill Wight went the distance as the Baltimore Orioles rallied impressively to
win in dramatic style over New York Yankees, 3 to 2.
Baltimore won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 3 runs utilizing 4
base hits. Bob Hale opened up the inning nicely when he slapped a single.
Dave Pope came next and he doubled. Dave Philley then ripped a base-knock
knocking home two runners. Philley took second on the throw. Jim Dyck came
up and he banged out a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for
Baltimore and the 9,686 home town fans in attendance. The teams had been
locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Wight(3-3) lasted until the end allowing 2 runs for the win. Bob Turley(12-9)
took the loss in relief. Wight and Cal Abrams were really whooping it up in
the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As Paul Richards
noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone
shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than
winning by a dozen runs!'
