WEB GEMS- Top 3rd: Tom Umphlett robbed Ted Williams of a Homerun!

Sammy White had 5 hits and 3 RBI at Griffith Stadium as the Boston Red Sox,

running on all cylinders, ripped the woeful Washington Nationals by a large

19 to 7 margin.

White provided the offensive punch. He smashed a two-run homer (his 10th of

the season) in the 2nd inning, tripled in the 4th inning, delivered a

one-base hit in the 7th inning, laced a base-hit scoring a run in the 7th

inning and slapped a single in the 8th inning. Boston bats were hot in the

7th inning when they had 9 runs on 7 hits. Boston had 22 hits for the game

and Washington had 13.

The winning pitcher was Frank Baumann(2-0) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3

innings. Camilo Pascual(1-10) was tagged with the loss in relief.
