Whitey Ford whitewashed Detroit and first baseman Joe Collins cracked 2

homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Detroit Tigers were badly beaten by the amazing

New York Yankees, 13 to 0.

Collins was unconscious all day. The Detroit fans hated to see him

approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He lifted

one out of the park for a two run home run in the 4th inning, lofted a

three-run 'big-fly' (his 18th of the season) in the 6th inning and delivered

a one-base hit in the 9th inning. New York had 12 hits for the afternoon.

For Ford(17-5) it was his 4th shutout this year. Steve Gromek(6-10) ended up

with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 5 and 1/3 innings of

work.

The New York ballclub's record now stands at 78-46. With the loss, Detroit

has a record of 5-5 lately, 65-59 overall.
