In a game for the baseball purist, Pedro Ramos(2-6) and Dick Donovan(14-5)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Washington Nationals finally emerged
victorious over Chicago White Sox, 2 to 1.
Washington jumped on top of Chicago in the top of the 3rd inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits. Jose Valdivielso smacked a single. Ramos came next and he
laid down a sacrifice bunt. After another out, Pete Runnels stepped up to
the plate and he laced a base-knock scoring the run. The Chicago offense
proved no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.
Ramos got help from Chuck Stobbs who earned his 3rd save. Chuck Dressen was
just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's
great to get the monkey off our back. Now maybe we can relax a little and
play the kind of baseball of which we are capable.'
