The St. Louis Cardinals edged the floundering Pittsburgh Pirates in 12 innings
at Forbes Field by the score of 4 to 3.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. St. Louis came out on top in the 12th
inning. Red Schoendienst delivered a single. Schoendienst stole second with
some aggressive base running. Bill Virdon then laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Rip Repulski stepped in and he was walked intentionally. Roy Face then threw
one that got by the catcher for a passed ball scoring the run. St. Louis
ended up with 13 hits for the game while Pittsburgh had 10.
Al Gettel(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Gettel got relief
help from Paul Lapalme who gained credit for his 5th save. Face(6-7) was
charged with the loss in relief.
