WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Bill Sarni blocked the plate, saving a run!

First baseman Wally Moon had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals

defeated the Chicago Cubs by a score of 6 to 5 at Wrigley Field.

St. Louis had 4 runs cross the plate in the top of the 7th inning when they

had 3 base hits. The big moment was provided by Moon who silenced the

stadium when he stroked a base-hit bringing in two baserunners. Chicago made

it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

The winning pitcher was Al Gettel(2-0) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an

inning. Barney Schultz got the save, his 3rd. Jim Davis(6-5) suffered the

loss in relief.

'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Stan Hack said.

'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'
