WEB GEMS- Bot 4th: Jim Busby robbed Mickey Vernon of a Homerun!
Right fielder Bob Nieman connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI as the very
talented Chicago White Sox topped the league door-mat Washington Nationals by
a score of 7 to 5 at Griffith Stadium.
Chicago took the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning as they scored 2
runs on 2 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Nieman who
helped quiet the crowd when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his
10th of the season). Both teams ended up with 10 hits on the afternoon.
Virgil Trucks(12-9) allowed 4 runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory.
Trucks got help from Billy Pierce who earned his 1st save. Chuck
Stobbs(6-11) was hit with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering
5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.
With this win, Chicago has a league leading 87-51 record. They have been 3-7
lately. With this loss, Washington has a 3-7 record of late, 50-84 overall.
