WEB GEMS- Top 4th: Yogi Berra blocked the plate, saving a run!

68,870 fans were treated to a fine game at Yankee Stadium as only one run

separated the combatants at game's end. The New York Yankees won by the

slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

Both teams were tied at 7 runs apiece after nine innings. New York came out

on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Joe Collins was hit by

a pitch. After another out, Gil McDougald stepped in and he tripled making

New York the winners and sending the 68,870 fans home happy. Chicago had 15

hits in the game while New York had 12, but New York had the more timely

hits.

The winning pitcher was Tom Sturdivant(5-2) who allowed no runs in 1 inning.

Sandy Consuegra(8-5) absorbed the loss in relief. With this win, New York

has a 87-53 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Marty Marion was unhappy

with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said.

'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'
