Jim Wilson pitched a complete game and Dave Philley had 2 base hits at
Memorial Stadium where the Baltimore Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers in 10
innings 5 to 4.
The score was tied at 3 after nine. Baltimore won the hard fought contest in
the 10th inning. Tex Nelson kicked off the action when he banged out a
single. After an out was recorded, Dave Pope came to the plate and doubled
resulting in a run. Jim Pyburn then would hit into a fielders choice giving
Baltimore the victory as 8,392 happy fans celebrated wildly. Baltimore
banged out 10 hits on the afternoon.
The victory was credited to Wilson(13-12) who went the distance, allowing 4
runs. Babe Birrer(5-5) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3
innings giving up 2 hits and no walks.
Baltimore now has a record of 47-89. With this loss, Detroit has a 4-6 record
of late, 71-70 overall.
