In a close game it was the Kansas City Athletics 8, the Cleveland Indians 6 at
Municipal Stadium.
Kansas City came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs.
After an out was recorded, Enos Slaughter opened up the rally as he drew a
walk. Gus Zernial was next and he smashed a two-run homer (his 22nd of the
season). Kansas City out-hit Cleveland for the game, 9 hits to 6.
Walt Craddock(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Tom Gorman gained credit for his 12th save. Art Houtteman(4-9) was
given the loss in relief. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.
With this win, Kansas City has a 47-88 record. They have been 4-6 lately.
Even with the loss, Cleveland still has a nice 8-2 record in recent weeks.
They are 82-55 on the season.
