WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Mickey Vernon robbed Jim Delsing of a base hit.
Fred Hatfield had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Griffith Stadium where the Detroit
Tigers beat the Washington Nationals 4 to 2.
Detroit did all of it's offensive work in the 4th inning scoring 4 runners on
3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Frank House who deflated
the mood of the partisan fans when he laced a one-base hit which was good for
two runs. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.
The winning pitcher was Frank Lary(13-14) who allowed 2 runs in 8 innings.
Lary got help from Dick Marlowe who was credited with his 1st save. Ted
Abernathy(5-10) suffered the loss.
The Detroit ballclub's record now stands at 73-70. With the loss Washington
now has a record of 52-87.
