Lino Donoso completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Pittsburgh
Pirates defeated the woeful St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 6 to 1 at
Sportsmans Park.
In the 4th inning Pittsburgh went on top for good with 2 runs on 3 hits.
Roberto Clemente led off and he delivered a one-base hit. Frank Thomas next
to the plate and he doubled bringing in a run. Jack Shepard was a strikeout
victim, unable to help out. Preston Ward came up and he stroked a single.
Johnny O'Brien stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final
run of the inning. Pittsburgh totaled 11 hits on the night.
The victory went to Donoso(3-7) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Harvey
Haddix(12-13) took the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings.
