Gene Freese ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated

the New York Giants 8 to 7 at Polo Grounds.



The game was decided in the 9th inning. Dick Groat banged out a single. Dick

Littlefield was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. After another out,

Freese stepped up to the plate and he doubled scoring the run. It was roller

coaster of a game as the lead change hands 5 times.



The winning pitcher was Littlefield(3-11) who allowed no runs in 2 innings.

Marv Grissom(0-8) was the losing pitcher in relief. 'It's almost like the

ball was trying to hit my bat,' Freese said. 'Whenever I would swing, the

ball found the sweet spot.'
