One run was the difference at Fenway Park as the Boston Red Sox defeated the

Baltimore Orioles 6 to 5.

Boston tallied 3 runs in the 5th inning when they had 3 base hits. Faye

Throneberry kicked off the action when he smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'

(his 9th of the season). After an out was recorded, Norm Zauchin came to the

plate and hit a bases-empty home run (his 32nd of the season). After another

out, Billy Consolo stepped in and he smacked a single. Pete Daley came up

and he reached on an error. Milt Bolling stepped into the box and drew a

walk to load the bases. Jimmy Piersall added to the outburst and reached on

an error scoring the final run of the inning. Although they lost, Baltimore

did out-hit Boston 11 to 7.

Frank Baumann(5-1) allowed 5 runs in 5 innings, and picked up the victory. Leo

Kiely gained credit for his 7th save. Erv Palica(4-17) was charged with the

loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his

best stuff,' Pinky Higgins said after the game. 'Baumann did not have

command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew

how to pitch!'
