In a thriller the Baltimore Orioles staged a dramatic comeback then held on to
win over the pitiful Washington Nationals by a score of 6 to 5 at Griffith
Stadium.
Baltimore had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3
base hits. Chuck Diering started the inning off right when he doubled. Tom
Gastall next to the plate and he doubled bringing in a run. After another
out, Gus Triandos stepped up to the plate and he hit a deep fly scoring the
final run of the inning. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5
times.
The win was credited to Art Schallock(3-4) who went 2 innings allowing 1 run.
Chuck Stobbs(6-14) was charged with the loss in relief.
Paul Richards was very happy after the game, 'It's great to come back and win
it in your last at bats! Our guys just wouldn't give up. And did you see the
fans - one minute they're laughing and screaming down all sorts of
unprintable stuff at our guys - the next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very
enjoyable win this afternoon!'
