Steve Korcheck's walk off single gave the Nationals a 8-7 win over the Orioles in the first of two games.

Steve Korcheck had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Washington Nationals staged a

dramatic comeback over the league door-mat Baltimore Orioles by a score of 8

to 7 at Griffith Stadium.



Washington erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning

with 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Mickey Vernon started

the attack as he drew a walk. Roy Sievers stepped up next and he delivered a

single. After another out, Korcheck came to the plate and singled giving

Washington the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. For the game

Washington out-hit Baltimore 12 to 9.



Spec Shea(2-7) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. George

Zuverink(3-7) was hit with the loss in relief. 'We just wouldn't give up,'

Korcheck said. 'Much of the credit goes to our fans - they were with us the

whole way.'
